On the 9th December 2021, two school groups had the chance to visit Ballogup, Lake Pleasant View, for Cultural awareness and seed collecting as part of South Coast NRMs Noongar Kaartdijin (knowledge) program.
Students from Manypeaks Primary School and the Great Southern Home Education Network collected a variety of endemic seeds with renowned local collector Craig Luscombe, to be used for revegetation at Ballogup. Local Noongar educators Vernice Gillies and Larry Blight from Kurrah Mia, shared their extensive knowledge of Indigenous food and medicinal plants and the importance of this very significant Aboriginal site.
T
he excursion is the first in the new Noongar Kaartdijin series of excursions and incursions hosted by South Coast NRM to bring Noongar cultural educators and ecological awareness to students and teachers in the lower Great Southern. The program has been made possible through support from the Western Australian Government’s State Natural Resource Management Program WA and Commonwealth Bank.
