SOUTH COAST ENVIRO-EXPERIENCES

Creating community connections through environmental volunteering

With intra-State tourism bringing more visitors to the South Coast region than ever before, and many locals choosing to holiday at home, people are looking for experiences that enhance their connection to our natural environment.

South Coast Enviro-Experiences, supported by Lotterywest, is a new project set to be delivered by South Coast NRM. It will focus on increasing capacity of organisations relying on volunteers, for both on-ground work, but also group governance, and will promote a suite of environmental volunteering opportunities over the next 18 months.

The South Coast region has a strong history of volunteering for the environment, but the numbers are down and a smaller number of people provide repeat efforts.

South Coast Enviro-Experiences will encourage volunteerism across the South Coast and increase the capacity of environment groups to grow and manage their volunteers. In turn, this will support the community to care for our natural heritage. Linking with the 6 Noongar seasons and supported by Volunteering WA and regional environment and volunteering groups, experiences will be matched to generational and cultural needs.

ENVIRO EXPERIENCES

Hands-on volunteer experiences linked to existing community projects to protect and restore our coastal, marine, woodland and riverine environments. Activities will include planting, weeding, beach clean ups etc. Opportunities will also be available for volunteers to get involved in community group workings.

NOONGAR FAMILY FIELD DAYS

Noongar families – Elders, men, women and children on country with community environmental groups and scientists, sharing traditional ecological knowledge and mainstream land management methods. Field days are co-designed with Noongar Elders to recreate experiences based on sharing traditional practices between generations. Find out more by watching our YouTube video: Noongar Family Field Trip

SALTY SUMMERS

Pop-up beach activities at popular coastal locations during summer school holidays, targeting families with young children. Designed to increase understanding of, and engagement with, coastal environments using touch pools, beach combing and citizen science monitoring.

CITIZEN SCIENCE

Hands-on environmental and science-based monitoring activities. Volunteers will monitor Malleefowl nests, Western Ringtail Possums, or sea mammal populations, to name a few. The data they contribute helps inform research and monitoring of threatened species in our region.

SCIENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

Bi-monthly science and environment community events focused on natural resource management, science and participation. These events provide opportunities for knowledge sharing and forging connections, nurturing a community of volunteers and fostering the next generation of environmental custodians.
